The Opera Company of Brooklyn (OCB), founded in 2000, promotes talented young artists and provides affordable and accessible opera to all generations. OCB brings opera to the mainstream public and out of its large and traditionally formal institution. Focused on the future of opera, we nurture the burgeoning careers of young singers, conductors, pianists and coaches-the opera stars of tomorrow-as we build new audiences.
The company, a major force in the New York City arts scene, allows artists to share their enthusiasm and love for the art form with diverse audiences in intimate, dynamic settings. With a thriving educational program, artists learn roles, get familiar with the process of putting on a professional quality performance, and spend enough time onstage so they are ready and comfortable to perform anytime, anywhere. OCB provides a safe, supportive environment for artists making a transition into a full-time performing career.
Our innovative and small virtual company consists of dedicated unpaid staff, volunteers and interns working from across the US on home computers. Our hard work yields results equal to large-budget opera houses, especially in the media. Featured on the Jeopardy quiz show, Good Morning America with MythBusters and CNN, other favorable coverage include numerous reports on radio: National Public Radio's Day to Day, American Public Media's Marketplace, 1010WINS, WNYC's Overnight Music and Soundcheck, and reviews and articles (some front-page and full-page) in: Wall Street Journal, NY Times, NY Daily and NY Post newspapers, NY Magazine, American Record Guide, Opera News Magazine and Crain's New York Business. Metropolitan Opera's "Opera News" magazine named our CD "BEST OF THE YEAR," recorded on Albany Records and featuring music by American composer, Thomas Pasatieri.
